Discrimination and stereotyping Rastas and or people on dreadlocks isn’t Greek story; for many decades, people who have championed the cause of Rastafari or wear dreadlocks have suffered countless cases of victimization and molestation without provocation across different circles. And it looks as if the world is against such people (Rastas, people on dreadlocks).
Though this ill-treatment isn’t as ‘horrible’ as it was in the past years, it still persists in our society, not just in Ghana but globally. Interestingly, these people — Rastafarians — are the ones who preach, live and inculcate the values of peace, love and serenity among society. The ones who have the voices to carry these messages in songs have, for many years, transformed society, positively!
In November 2018, UNESCO officially recognized “Reggae” music, per the efforts of the Legendary Bob Marley, and stamped Reggae music as a cultural renaissance and transformative form of music that has shaped society for the better, thus, it preaches the message of peace and love, and more importantly, the revolutionary messages it carries which fights against negativity.
Black-I, one of Ghana’s Veteran Reggae Musicians, in this regard, took time back into the studio to create this new masterpiece he titles “Love Rules”.
“Love Rules” by Black-I is a song that goes beyond just “dreadlocks” and “Rastafarianism”. With very simple but deep and relatable lyrics and melody, Black-I preaches the message of love; he thinks if humans loved one another (more), void of colour, race, status or religious beliefs, the world would be a better place than it is now. Song was done on the ‘Forgive I Jah Riddim’.
With the presence of the pandemic that struck the world from 2020 till now and has left many people devastated and businesses collapsed, the best way to get thread and needle together to fix things is when we all show (more) love to not just humans, but Mother Nature.
