Over the last few years, we’ve watched Yaadcore develop from a selector into an artist with increasingly stellar results. Our only complaint about his recording career thus far is that he hasn’t put out enough music. Easily one of our favorite tracks from him thus far is “The Calling,” a motivating, reggae/trap banger which details his spiritual and cultural awakening.
The track, co-produced by Yaadcore along with Ian Mckee and Young Zoe Beats, now receives a video nearly a year after dropping last summer on Yaadcore’s 12 Yaad Records label and Delicious Vinyl Island. The video, directed by Tizzy Tokyo, finds Yaadcore witnessing a mystical Nyabinghi session before suddenly awakening in his studio. As he goes about his day, he’s followed everywhere by the “mystic lady” from his dream (played by Gloria “Mama G” Simms) before ultimately finding himself in the bush at the session from his dreams. In addition to Simms, a cultural leader in Jamaica where she’s recognized as Paramount Queen of the Maroons, the video also features cameos from Lutan Fyah, Samory I and Karbon, among others.
“‘The Calling’ is a special song to me, and now I can say the video is very close to my heart as well,” Yaadcore says. “We made something from nothing with just a creative vision. Teaming with my photographer Tizzy Tokyo to execute these visuals was definitely fun and challenging while taking me a bit into the acting world. Hopefully the storyline can resonate and inspire all the onlookers.”
