Mohammed Blakk serves African Royalty at Afrochella with his ‘Made in Africa’ installation

“I had heard of the Fulani and Dan tribes. But to see all of these cultures live in living colour is an amazing feeling. Thanks to Afrochella and Mohammed for making that happen.”

Mohammed Blakk unlocked yet another successful Afrochella milestone with his ‘Made in Africa’ installation featuring horse wielding chiefs from the North and several other models showcasing the Dagomba, Dan, Fulani, Hausa and Yakouba tribes.

Afrochella has been a go-to for many patrons seeking to enjoy everything the festive season in Ghana has to offer. This year’s edition themed ‘Made in Africa’ was nothing short of what the culturally explosive event has been since its inception in 2018. The festival pulled in several artists including Mohammed Blakk to table a show worthy of Afrochella’s foreshadowing.

Mohammed Blakk’s installation was hard not to look at. The set had six models (Mohammed Blakk included) adorned in priestly and ethnic regalia sourced from diverse African tribes like the Dans from Mali, Dagombas from Ghana, Tuaregs etc.

The art installation zeroed in on these ancient tribes and how their people express themselves through sacred masks, ethnic uniforms, and artworks. It all happened in an artsy space tailored to provide an informative and exhilarating experience for the viewing pleasure of Afrochella’s patrons.

Mohammed Blakk pulled from multi-faceted talents with a unilateral focus: To show the world all that is made in Africa. With this body of work, Mohammed Blakk marks his third Afrochella project since 2018.

Mohammed Blakk is an embodiment of art, fashion and culture. Talking about his objective for the installation, the artist revealed ‘I didn’t want it to be something they’ll just look at. Rather, a memory they can take back with them lasting for the rest of their lives. That’s why we had to bring in the chiefs themselves’.

Mohammed Blakk is the visual artist and creative entrepreneur behind the Afronative Streetwear brand. He doubles as the creative director for Vibe Heavy – an uber-creative agency based in Seattle.
