Johannesburg, 2 December 2022: Apple Music today announced Amapiano DJ and producer, DBN Gogo (real name Mandisa Radebe), as the next Isgubhu cover star.
The release of her highly-anticipated debut album Whats Real (2022), available to stream on Apple Music in Spatial Audio, is deeply rooted in the meaningful connections that “Umaka Mah” has with her family and friends. Featuring Stixx, DJ Stopper, EltonK and Nvcho, the new generation of Amapiano stars signed to DBN Gogo’s label, Zikode Records, alongside established artists Boohle, Pabi Cooper and Mellow & Sleazy to name a few, Whats Real is a collection of soulful, spiritual and dancefloor-rooted anthems that pay tribute to her heritage.
To celebrate her feature DBN Gogo has also created an exclusive Isgubhu playlist that champions Africa’s burgeoning Afro House scene. “This playlist includes music from me, my peers and the talented artists under my record label ‘Zikode Records,’ she says. “I want people to dance and enjoy the music, and I’m thankful for the opportunity from Apple Music to push Amapiano to the world.”
Taking over Isgubhu By… for this month is Johannesburg-born electronic composer Daev Martian (real name Dave Moyo) whose latest EP Digital Feedback (2022) draws from jazz, hip hop and electronic music. “With so much variety in the South African electronic and dance scene, having all-time favourites has become more interesting, because it changes overtime,” said Martian. “My favourite era in electronic music thus far is, however, from 2009 until now… This playlist features some of the electronic dance artists I will always listen to and enjoy, some old and some new music.”
Launched in early 2021, Isgubhu is the definitive home of African Dance and Electronic music on Apple Music, and spotlights and elevates the work of African Electronic DJs, producers and creatives. Isgubhu, a Zulu word meaning “beat” and used to refer to a banging song, pays homage to an evergreen set of genres and the African artists who have played a pivotal role in shaping the Dance and Electronic scene across the world.
Isgubhu also houses a collection of playlists including Spotlight On–a focus on boutique labels like Soul Candi, House Afrika, Stay True Sounds and Uganda’s Hakuna Kulala & Nyege Nyege Tapes and Isgubhu Voices–a focus on the best Dance and Electronic tracks that feature vocals.
