On November 05, the short film “QUIET” screened at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in Addis Ababa as part of the Afro Film Alliance event. The selection placed the film on an international platform in front of African filmmakers, curators, film leaders, and industry voices.
“QUIET” was written and co-produced by Nigerian Filmmaker Abisola Ajayi, directed and co-produced by Melvin Dain from Onyx Vision Studio. Melvin Dain also executive produced the film. The project is a collaboration between Onyx Vision Studio and Phlurx Media, with technically collaboration with Zadok Donkor Yeboah.
Melvin says,
“It feels surreal for me that I can do a project that would be screened on a stage like the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. This happens to be my second short film and having it screen at UNECA is a very big milestone for me, my team, and my company,” he shared.
The film deals with controlled silence, emotional internal struggle, and the power of suppressed reactions. The main intention of the film is to show how people with disabilities carry pain and still continue life in spaces where they are expected to operate normally. “QUIET” was created to spark reflection without loudness. The story forces the viewer to stay present and observe.
The journey of the film moved from development, writing, and production under limited resources to now reaching an international stage where African stories are being acknowledged and studied. This screening proves that small African films, independent films, and low budget short films still have space and recognition when the story is authentic and when the purpose behind it is strong.
For Onyx Vision Studio, this selection is another reminder that the company is committed to telling grounded stories that reflect real emotion and real human experience. The team considers this screening as a push to continue building films that can travel, films that can speak without heavy dialogue, and films that can shift personal thinking even in short run-times.
For Melvin personally, this also serves as a confirmation that his filmmaking journey is active and growing in the right direction. From creating in Ghana to being screened inside the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa is a major confidence boost. The team is now preparing to position the film for more festival circuits across Africa and beyond.
With this milestone, Melvin and Onyx Vision Studio look forward to new collaborations, stronger development resources, and more platforms that will support young African filmmakers who are still building and experimenting.
“QUIET” is only the beginning of what is next.
