Afrobeats is the future and Ghana needs to give it priority – Kelvyn Boy

Original Afrobeat Badman, Kelvyn Boy, has called for concerted effort to ensure that afrobeat as a genre of music is given the necessary support to thrive in Ghana.

Responding to a question in an interview with Amansan Krakye on Radio Central, he was asked whether it’s difficult or easy to make a mainstream breakthrough with afrobeat, Kelvyn Boy said “it’s not hard or difficult to breakthrough with Afrobeat. It’s not hard for you the artiste. That’s what we are used to all these years.

“That’s what the likes of Osibisa did and it was inspired by highlife. That’s what we have been listening to. No wonder we now have Afrobeat as a category in the VGMA.

“It’s just about we accepting it and last year 2019 during the year of return, everyone was talking about Afrobeat during most of the concerts.

“Even in Nigeria and internationally, it’s widely accepted. If it’s difficult doing Afrobeat I won’t have survived in the music industry.

“I don’t do hip pop, dancehall or jama and that’s what has been keeping us going ever since we hit the limelight through mainstream.

Most people contend that afrobeat is the next genre of music to take the world by storm with Shatta Wale claiming lately that hiplife is not recognized globally as compared to afrobeat.
