Apple Music today announces Pretoria-born house DJ Lebza The Villain (real name Lebogang Thubakgale) as the next Isgubhu cover star.
“Being the cover star of the Isgubhu playlist on Apple Music? Yo, it’s an honour!” he tells Apple Music. “Isgubhu represents the heartbeat of African dance music, and to be a face of that movement is special. It’s a moment of recognition for the culture, the music, and the journey.”
Renowned for his dynamic DJ sets and innovative productions, Lebza The Villain has become a prominent figure in the South African dance music scene. His work seamlessly blends elements of house and electronic music, earning him acclaim both locally and internationally.
His latest EP, VOICELESS, is a compelling four-track collection that showcases his innovative approach to dance music. Departing from traditional, vocal-driven tracks, Lebza The Villain immerses listeners in a purely instrumental experience, allowing his intricate melodies to convey profound emotions, characterized by rich soundscapes and rhythmic complexity.
To celebrate his feature, Lebza The Villain has also chosen five diverse tracks to be featured on the exclusive Isgubhu playlist, including “Batumi” by Caiiro, “The Road Is Long” by Thakzin, Mo-T and Mas Musiq, and “Euphoria” by powerhouse duo Shimza and Jnr SA.
“Each track I selected represents a unique and powerful element within the African dance and electronic music landscape,” he tells Apple Music. “These songs embody the rich rhythms, deep grooves and forward-thinking production that push the Afro House and 3-step genres forward.”
On what he loves about the artists behind each track, he says, “Their ability to merge African elements with modern electronic production is what makes their music so compelling. Whether it’s their innovative sound design, infectious drum patterns, their global infiltration or their ability to craft immersive sonic experiences, these artists are shaping the future of dance music.”
Isgubhu also houses a collection of alumni playlists, editorial playlists, exclusive DJ mixes, and additional content from the best dance and electronic acts on the continent.
