Cameroon: Dr. Okwen shares new single “Nwa Kwa” — LISTEN

Texas based Cameroonian artist Dr Okwen releases his debut single titled ‘Nwa Kwa’ which means ‘Good Child ‘. A heartfelt tribute to a child’s triumph over autism.

 

The song tells the story of a palm wine tapper’s wife who gives birth to an autistic child. The child regains full communication and everyone is happy and partying. It was originally recorded in Lagos in 1992 and has been hidden for 30 years. Dr Okwen is now ready to share his music with the world and encourage people to trust their path whilst staying true to their vision. His debut single ‘Nwa Kwa’ is currently the most played Moghamo song in the world with over 2 million views on Youtube.

 

 

 

 

With “Nwa Kwa,” Okwen delivers a powerful message of hope and perseverance. ‘I want the world to hear the beauty of African language and culture.In the case of this song it is a contribution to mankind in Moghamo.’

 

Dr Okwen is no ordinary dentist, he is a multi Instrumentalist, singer, songwriter and producer on a remarkable journey of self actualization, celebration across 3 decades and 3 continents. Dr Okwen has 2 private practices , 1488 Dental in North Houston and MB2 MicroSurgery also in Texas.He sits on the board of Directors for the American Association of Endodontics (AAE) with responsibility in the US and around the globe.
The release of “Nwa Kwa” marks an important milestone in Dr Okwens career as a musician. With a growing fan base and reputation for creating inspiring music as a form of socio-cultural engagement , he is quickly becoming a rising star bringing Moghamo music to the world stage.He is on a mission to inspire, share the joy and beauty of his heritage in so doing becoming a de Facto Moghamo Cultural Ambassador. “I wrote ‘Nwa Kwa’ to celebrate the incredible strength and determination of those who overcome autism,” said Okwen. “I want this song to inspire people to believe in the power of hope and never give up on their dreams, no matter how challenging they may seem.”

Dr Okwen was born on June 29 1972 in Wum, the English speaking part of Cameroon. He got a scholarship to study Medicine in UNILAG (University of Lagos) but decided to study Dentistry in Benin.Due to all the strikes, he was in Lagos most of the time and lived in Ikoyi from 1991- 2002 with his Aunt who was Head of the United Nations Development Programme UNDPs largest unit on the African continent.

 

Whilst attending the University of Benin he further developed his musicality playing the violin for UNIBEN Chorus Orchestra. He graduated in 1999 and went on to complete his Housemanship in Bonny Camp Military Hospital Lagos.Passionate about developing the medical infrastructure he led an initiative to donate dental equipment to St John of God Hospital in Batibo, Cameroon.In 2001 he hosted a daily morning radio program broadcast live on NTA 2 Channel 5 that focused on Sports Dentistry, human angle stories, international affairs and world congress from June 1st to 20th.
He moved to Florida in 2004 studied an MBA in Accounting & Finance at Florida Metropolitan University part time from 2004-2008 whilst working as an accountant for HYGIA.He then worked as a Senior Account for American Maritime Officers Plans and was in charge of their Medical plans.Okwen relocated from Florida to Houston Texas in June 2011 as a Resident specialist in Endodontics and MicroSurgery training at the University of Texas.

 

He traveled extensively around Central and South America shooting his documentary Africans Outside Africa which is in production and scheduled for release in 2024. The aim of the documentary was to address the cultural and ontological disconnect between Africans on the continent and Africans in the diaspora. ‘Africans in Africa do not understand Africans in the diaspora and vice versa as much as they should. Or why they are the way they are and why they do what they do in the way they do. It is very important for Africans in the Diaspora to celebrate their cultural impact, by building wealth, systems of transference and transmission that foster the understanding of how to retain the social value of their cultural equity through positive representation across our indigenous and global communities.
