After 25 years since the death of one of the most legendary artists of our time, Tupac’s legacy is strong and still thriving. Generations after generations, still relate to his music and are influenced by his messages. In this spirit, Canadian Rapper Swiss OG, ironically born on Tupac’s birthday, June 16th decided to do an international tribute crossing genres of music and continents.
The video was released one month ago as the whole team from the United States and Canada went to Kingston, Jamaica to shoot the video with Sizzla Kalonji. The producer of the song is Jeff McCulloch, very prominent and known for his work as engineer/producer of the legendary album and movie, Dirty Dancing. Swiss OG and Aktual are the co-producers.
“Tupac inspired me to do the song, from his song Ambitions Of A Rider. He is my mentor and favorite rapper, the reason that I do this music and I watched his style. I have a little part of him inside of me. That’s why I featured E.D.I. Don on the song because he was close to Pac. I put Tha Realest; he was a part of Death Row Records. I added Sizzla because he likes Pac too, he is one of his favorite rappers too,” breaks down Swiss OG.
E.D.I. Don is one of the members of Tupac’s renowned hip hop group. He had a very close relationship with Tupac and toured with him all over the world. “It is always a pleasure and my own personal responsibility to make sure I am representing the legacy of my friend, family and mentor to the highest of levels. When Swiss came to me with the idea and the track, I was more than ready to be a part of the song,” expresses E.D.I.Don.
Sizzla Kalonji has always had love and respect for Tupac and his music. They both have used music to express powerful messages to the people. He explains the message of I’m So Ambitious as it relates to young people, “To all the beautiful little children in the world always be ambitious and don’t go down the wrong track. Stay in school and get your education. Learn to finish college. Be a part of the world community, it’s so beautiful. Everything is here waiting for you. Nothing ain’t going nowhere. Be ambitious, I am so ambitious.”
Tupac Shakur has become one of the most celebrated musicians of all times. His impact is global and I’m So Ambitious is an example of that impact. Hip Hop Writer Kevin Powell, characterized Shakur as one of the most important figures that we’ve seen in the last 25 years or so. When you say the names Bob Marley, Elvis Presley, John Legend, Marilyn Monroe, you must say Tupac.
In the spirit of Tupac, I’m So Ambitious continues that tradition. “It was dope to be a part of the I’m So Ambitious project. It was a lot of fun being in Jamaica, to see the island and get the culture and experience that part of it. We are on record with some phenomenal M.C.’s. and that is just historic. The topics we are talking about, they are motivational as well,” explains Tha Realest.
He continues, “We will always keep Pac’s legacy alive, it’s just a part of who we are. West Coast rider, being from the South and just representing for one the best M.C.’s that walked this planet.
