Ghana has been the beacon of Africa when it comes to music from the days of Osibisa to Ampadu to Kojo Antwi and the likes but unfortunately we don’t see much of their musical prowess on the map in recent times. Ghana was actually the first African country to attain a BET nomination but have missed a spot at the last awards ceremony.
That said, singer and songwriter PzeeFire who is signed under Speech Production Music Label magnified the office of legendary Fela Kuti because of how he placed more value on High Life music and popularized it through afrobeat.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with BeenieWords, i asked him his take on the current state of Ghana music through his lenses. In response, he registered his displeasure saying comic characters (none talents) like AY Poyoo, Shatta Bundle and the likes are forcefully promoted by the media. I’m not saying this to downplay their office as creative people, but ideally comic characters can’t be prioritized above real talents – he added.
According to him, agenda driven artists hardly get the necessary support from gatekeepers, rather you see them pushing some comic characters like the names mentioned above. Meanwhile, countries like Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Kenya and the rest are out there busy pushing their talents like Fireboy, Joe Boy, Rema, etc.
“I don’t really know the problem but I hope things will change so Ghana can enjoy their authentic creativity once again” he concluded. When asked who his favorite Ghanaian personality was he simply replied Kwame Nkrumah.
