I don’t care how it happens, I just want to blow and become a superstar this year – Tom D’Frick

No, don’t misunderstand his comments for an artiste ‘desperate’ for stardom. Every hardworking artiste wants to be recognized ‘up there’, regardless of how long they have been on that path with their craft. It is on this premise that Tom D’Frick believes this year is his year of major breakthrough.

Tom D’Frick is one of the fast-rising Rappers from Volta South who keeps putting in the works by the minute and by the second to elevate his brand.

Within a year of just launching his professional career unto the scene, Tom D’Frick has already won for himself an enviable award at the last held Volta Music Awards (VMA) in March this year. He won “Hiphop Song Of The Year” at VMA 2020 with his song “The Truth”.

To think he is not mainstream yet or perhaps still not there, he was able to release 10 songs within the period of at least 12 months and dropped 5 music videos too. In times like these where resources and finances are scarce, it isn’t easy for an unsigned act to produce all these content within a space of one year while running on a ‘self-finance’ and ‘self-management’ basis.

I took a memory lane with Tom D’Frick in my interview with him to discover more. Apparently, he says he “used to play drums in the church while he was a juvenile” and that would trigger the yearn to explore his ideals within the music space.

Though Tom D’Frick explores varied music circles, he would want to be identified more as a Rapper due to his extreme love and passion for Hiphop. Listing his TOP 5 Artistes, he listed Sarkodie, Obrafour, Roddy Ricch, Nasty C and Kwesi Arthur.

“Simply, l want my story to be heard out there globally and l also want to motivate the youth and the society as a whole through the power of music and my vibe.” – Tom D’Frick

Background
Real name, Oridge Samuel McTrinity Abusah – now known in showbiz circles as Tom D’Frick. He lived his younger years in Akosombo and schooled there. The rising Rapper would later move to Akatsi in 2008. Akatsi is a vibrant business town with many music talents. He lived there for only a year before moving back to Accra in 2009 to hustle and pull resources together before finally moving back to base in Aflao in 2017.

Aflao, the last town in Southern Volta that connects to Lomé, the capital city of Togo is very iconic to Volta Showbiz in recent times. Out of nowhere, there has been a successive break out of rising music talents to dancers, comedians, just to name a few. Aflao has been very instrumental in Tom D’Frick’s career as it has very youthful guys who support musicians with a 360 adrenalin; this has largely come to influence Tom’s rise within a very short period. On the night of the Volta Music Awards 2020 where he was mentioned as the winner of the “Hiphop Song of the Year” in a very competitive category, it was quite a historic moment for the rising rapper who stood out among his peers who equally deserved it – but he won over them all. Tom had at least 3 nominations in VMA 2020.

“I have got love for music from childhood but because my background was financially unstable l had no choice than to pause the music and focus on the hustle for some time before picking it up in later years. I got into full time music when l realize l was ready to push myself as our music industry is not conducive in terms of helping or promoting upcoming artiste, or having opportunities with big Record Labels to sign you in a very competitive space like Ghana.

His Inspiration in Music
“My inspiration came from listening to different artistes who actually motivate me to work hard and push further,” – Tom D’Frick.

“Apart from honing my own craft, l spend a lot of time listening to other artistes; especially mainstream and very successful rappers so I can use their works as a blueprint to elevate myself to their level as well, and even more” he added.
