Learned showbiz pundit and blogger Atigsi Badek has charged musicians in the Upper East region to be distinct and infuse local rhythm in their songs.
He languishes over the habit where artists would want to sound like others than being themselves. He compares it to American rapper Kendrick Lamar. According to him, he would definitely go in for the latter than someone who imitates Kendrick Lamar.
To him, most artists are only interested in the prestige it brings but not the monetary fortitude of the career.
He said” considering the resources available, I think a fair majority are doing very well by way of exposure but I don’t think they are trying to make money. Most artists seem like fame is more important than money. I say this because we try to sound like other people. But what I keep saying is that in the music market people would always want something alternative. We are not bringing what is indigenously ours into music. I always use rap music as an example, Hip Hop is one of the genres that allows a lot of infusions so until we start infusing our local rhythms, it will be like that guy from Bolga who wants to sound like a New York artist. Why would I go for a Bolga rapper who sounds like a Kendrick Lamar when I could actually buy his music?
He was responding to a question about his assessment of the music industry and the efforts by artist who are striving for a breakthrough.
Atigsi Badek further sobbed over the absence of a concerted front in the industry. This he said, affects all other artists and events in the region because the numbers are few.
He also advised artists to move away from the common way of uploading songs on blogs but to analyze other ways of monetizing their music.
Meanwhile, he believes there’s an improvement and a couple of musicians like Rock City, Sarauta, Soorebia, Teflon Flexx are all doing well.
Lastly, Atigsi Badek urged all artist to make sure the home accepts them before thinking of making it down south.
He spoke on ”Word FM” in Zuarungu hosted by DJ Aluther, monitored by harmattangh.com.
