Kamaldeen Sulemana provided an assist as Rennes records 2-0 win over Paris Saint Germain

Bruno Génésio’s impressive Rennes side shocked table-toppers Paris Saint-Germain with a 2-0 win, alleviating their poor home record against them and ending the league leader’s perfect start to the Ligue 1 campaign.

The Ghana international whipped in across and which was turned in by Gaëtan Laborde- right footed shot from the centre of the box to the bottom left corner.

Just after the break, Rennes doubled their lead through Flavien Tait who delivered right footed shot from the centre of the box to the bottom left corner.

Buzzing with the presence of home supporters at the Roazhon Park, Rennes began proceedings in an intimidating manner, forcing ‘Les Parisiens’ to sit back, absorb the threat and revert back on the counter. Possessing arguably the most glittering attacking lineup in world football, Paris Saint-Germain couldn’t help but push themselves ahead in search of the opener, with Neymar and Kylian Mbappé wasting potential scoring opportunities right in front of goal by blasting their respective shots into the stands. Lionel Messi’s free kick triggered sighs of relief across the stadium as his 25-yard curler struck the crossbar midway through the half. Neymar and Ángel Di María began to orchestrate play, as the visitors repeatedly managed to breach the home side’s defence but were prevented from scoring, thanks to goalkeeper Alfred Gomis’ lofty presence. The first-half stoppage time saw ‘Les Rouges et Noir’ draw first blood as Gaëtan Laborde tapped the ball in from Kamaldeen Sulemana’s inch-perfect cross, leaving Gianluigi Donnarumma with no chance.

Rennes had a dream start to the second-half as they doubled their lead after just one minute through Flavien Tait’s close range volley, leaving Mauricio Pochettino’s men looking shell shocked on the pitch. Set with the tough task of coming back from behind to keep their perfect record intact, PSG pressed forward with great attacking intent, but always looked vulnerable on the counterattack. Mbappé thought he had started the comeback off with a tidy finish, only for it to be ruled out by VAR for offside.

The Parisians looked like they inflicted further damage on themselves after Achraf Hakimi seemed to have conceded a penalty, only for VAR to step in and deny the home side the chance to triple-up. With no chances materializing for the away side at the death, the capital club succumbed to their first defeat of the season.

With the impressive victory, Rennes equal Lyon’s record of most wins (5) against the Parisians since the beginning of the Qatari era, and at the same time derail the visitor’s eight consecutive win streak in the current league campaign.
