Match Report: England thumped Iran 6-2 in opening group game

England showed no mercy in their opening group B game of the World Cup in Qatar against Iran in a 6-2 demolition.

The three lions had only one win in seven matches coming into this game. But their patience and individual brilliance got them going from a beautiful header by Jude Bellingham and two thumping strike by Bukayo Saka and a sweet finish from Sterling put them in cruise control at half time.

Alireza Beiranvand, the Irani goalkeeper crushed into his own player and was substituted afterwards.

Iran made three straight subs after the first and Mehdi Taremi of Iran got two goals after the damage has been done by Saka who got his second goal of the afternoon.

The Saka received the Man Of The Match award after a brilliant display in the opening group game.
The Arsenal man got two goals one in each half to help the Three Lions cruise to victory.

Marcos Rashford and Jack Grealish came off the bench to score and put the game to bed. Iran lost their first match in Qatar after a poor tactical display against England.

Gareth Southgate and his team will go top of the group and their fellow teams, Wales and USA play each other later in the day.
