The tracklist, sound production, lyrics, mixed genre, theme, storylines, creativity, mannerism, the air of vigour and vitality of ‘Here I Come EP’ by Chief One is simply a statement of confidence, diversity, focus, determination, work ethic and style to declare his authority combined with his intention to buyout out die-hard fans across the globe. The 6-tracked EP is a fine blend of Brekete, Afrobeats, Afro-Fusion and Hiplife and was all produced by Hairlergbe.
I stand to be corrected, in a Twi dominated country like Ghana, it’s not easy to penetrate the industry. However, he has built a reputation with his Ewe vibes like pacesetter and legend Edem. The pictures he has painted in the minds of his listeners through his unique style on the EP are incredible. It makes one appreciate his personality and artistry. By extension, transforming passive fans into active fans.
My take on “Here I Come EP”
Young Boy:
The lead song on the EP is a motivational masterpiece to every individual especially the youths who are trying every means possible to make it in life. Even if things are tough and rough, they are still focused and determined to win at all costs through legal means. In a nutshell, it is a song that fuels one’s ambition to believe in their dreams and transform them into working dreams to accumulate success.
O2 Arena:
When you are destined for greatness, every setback is a steppingstone. This song is a great highlight about how defined and mentally prepared the artist intends to invade every territory there’s to conquer with his music. Chief One is not your regular type of trendy rapper or artist who taps into trends that ends. He knows exactly what he is about and how he intends to do things that will best sell his artistry to the right audience without limiting it to just certain people. Believing in oneself has always been his pillar of hope.
Du Agbe:
The title of the song is an Ewe language which translates ‘Enjoy Life’. Life is short nobody can ever believe in you better than yourself therefore you need to appreciate and celebrate the slightest progress in life. As far as Chief is concerned, when you’re blessed with the breathe of life, nothing should stop you from enjoying. The arrangement of the songs on the EP follows a unique pattern. This makes it extra easy to relate to the theme of the EP.
Mekamo:
The song title translates, ‘I careless’ in Ewe. In this song, he makes it clear people’s perception of him doesn’t concern or bother him one bit. He cuts his coat according to his size, pinpointing the fact, no matter what you do in life people will always complain so why not live the best life within one’s means?
Nyemedzio:
For no reason, I just love the lyrics and flow of this song. ‘Nyemedzio’ means ‘I Don’t Like It’. In this context, he talks about things in dislikes; bad energy, time wasters, gossip and people who don’t add up anything to his life. He also spoke about the kinds of stuff he is determined to achieve.
Novayi:
The last song on the EP happens to be one of the biggest songs in Ghana. ‘Novayi’ simply means ‘They Should By Pass’. Chief One makes it clear he is a loner; therefore, he can’t afford to mess up because there’s no backup when he does. Again, he is too determined to pay mind to haters, temptation and anything capable of his dreams and progress in life.
When a person is able write lyrics that paint pictures that makes perfect sense to listeners without stress, that makes that person an artist like Chief One. Some people may disagree with me, but just like a Piccadilly circus Chief One is a brilliant writer and storyteller. No wonder his catalogue of songs on the EP are feasts to the ears. I rate the EP 8 over 10, this is just my opinion.
