Rocky Dawuni delves into his Highlife Music Roots in New Video “Woara” – WATCH

Accra, Friday, September 17, 2021 – Rocky Dawuni’s brand new video “Woara” explores the foundations of Ghanaian Highlife music which forms the roots of Rocky Dawuni’s “Afro Roots” sound. The style of “Woara” is anchored in the Palm Wine variant of Highlife music which was popularized by artists such as the legendary Koo Nimo. The track features Highlife guitar great, Ackah Blay and Ghanaian beat maker Wei Ye Oteng. Dawuni releases this picturesque video right before the GRAMMY voting season begins.  “Woara” is the third video off of Rocky Dawuni’s critically acclaimed EP “Voice of Bunbon, Vol. 1 which is a candidate in the Global Music category.

“Woara” which means “you or it’s you” is sung in the local Akan dialect of Twi from Ghana. It is a love song that uses its call and response style to express the beauty and triumph of being in love. In a time when many people around the world are dealing with challenging circumstances, a simple feel-good song about love is what we all need to uplift our spirits.

The beautiful video for “Woara” was shot by Slinghot at the exquisite Villa Terranga which is located on the western edge of the capital city of Accra over-looking Bojo Beach. The picturesque setting of the Weija River also served as backdrop to the love story of the song. As an environmental ambassador, Rocky uses this opportunity to also highlight the importance of promoting the natural environment and clean water sources. The video also hints at promoting traditional African beauty concepts and natural lifestyles which was supported by Global African beauty brand, Alaffia. Rocky’s elegant clothing for the video shoot were designed by Ghanaian cutting edge fashion brand, Black & Phamous. The video was co-produced by Cary Sullivan and Elorm Beenie.

Tying in to Rocky’s aims of promoting African culture as well as protecting the natural environment, the UN Goodwill Ambassador for the Environment for Africa just returned to Ghana from an amazing trip to Costa Rica where he joined the UNFPA and the Government of Costa Rica for the inaugural “International Day of People of African Descent.” Costa Rica was the first country to host the celebrations after the commemoration of the day was adopted by the United Nations in 2020. The holiday, as stated by the UN, promotes “the extraordinary contributions of the African Diaspora around the world and seeks to eliminate all forms discrimination against people of African descent.” Rocky performed at the National Theatre in San Jose for invited dignitaries including President Carlos Alvarado Quesada and Vice Presient Epsy Campbell Bar. He also spoke at and participated in a 3-day forum for the event. Rocky was joined there by a delegation from Ghana including the Akwamuhene, Odenehu Kwarfo Akoto III and the Deputy Minister of Culture & Tourism, Mark Okraku Mantey who also participated in the a ceremony on the Caribbean coastal town of Cahuita  which commemorated the abolition of the transatlantic slave trafficking. Costa Rica is known for their very progressive environmental policy and all of the Ghanaian visitors marveled at the pristine rainforests and lush vegetation throughout the country as well as the lack of plastic pollution.
