A convincing debut from the young Dutch-based Ghanaian artist, ‘’Soul Searching’’ is a smooth and satiable blend of ubiquitous Afro-inspired genres together with Hip-Hop that un-ubiquitously embraces an identity of its own.
Per its title and fantasy-styled artwork, it is hard to miss that Sam Asari’s first ever compendium was inspired by stints of deeper thought of self and at the same time his sentience to overcome such hurdles himself. Done over 6-tracks that house a single feature, each song slots in as a piece of the crooner, recounting his ascent to becoming the man of the hour, Sam Asari.
To rightfully relay the mood it set out to, ‘Come With Me’ opens the EP up on a pleasant base of guitar strings that project Sam’s unique-sounding vocals with much ease, sweetly transiting listeners to the freestyle-feeling ‘Sauce’. Running on a super tranquil production, Sam takes a walk down memory lane on the latter, reminiscing on a golden hour with a past fling.
Then comes one of the EP’s finest, ‘Beauty out of Pain’ featuring American artist, Joe O. Done on a bouncy Samcro production, Sam and Joe O hop together on the voguish Trap instrumental to flirt with their newfound zest for creating beauty out of pain. The tone then drifts to a ‘’good boy gone bad’’ persona on Afroswing vibe ‘Panana’. Coming off as a very melodic entry, Sam maintains the lose feel and guitar elements of the first song, dropping lyrics like: ‘’Hot like pepper, sweet like honey’’ along the way.
Another Samcro production – ‘TTD’ (Ten Toes Down) swoops in as yet another solo song. The urban Hip-Hop song resonates around themes of commitment, loyalty, love and dedication, to which Sam reinforces: ‘’No matter how it goes, just know I got you fosho/If I’m ballin’ you ballin too’’.
Produced by Lotus JXJO and Samcro, ‘Melodies’ ends it all in swift grace to depict Sam’s embrace of life itself – his very essence, fittingly alluding to the song’s soulful feel. Life is an unpredictable sport, but Sam is a fearless partaker of it: ‘’Cause after the rain comes sunshine, have faith/I will walk through the storm, so yeah come what may’’.
‘’Soul Searching’’ may be Sam Asari’s first, but his gift for composing songs when in his element is noteworthy and an effective. Catch all the vibe right here: https://samasari.lnk.to/SoulSearching
