My Hit Song ‘Maria’ was overlooked because it was sung in Ga Language – Amarh Pino

In a recent interview with Naa Kwarley on La TV’s “Moment Show,” Ghanaian highlife music legend and leader of the Ozim Zim band, Amarh Pino, took us on a captivating journey through his remarkable career. He shared the challenges he encountered while promoting his hit song “Maria,” a track that initially went unnoticed due to its Ga language lyrics.

Pino’s narrative revealed a determined spirit as he disclosed that no one in the music industry was willing to produce “Maria.” Faced with this difficulty , he took matters into his own hands, embarking on a bold move. He relocated to the United States, where he self-produced the song and even created its music video. The dedication and hard work paid off, as “Maria,” which was recorded back in 1999, finally gained recognition and popularity five years later.

The turning point in Amarh Pino’s career came with the release of the great hit “Ozim Zim.” This song not only put him on the global music map but also solidified his status as a highlife music icon. What makes this accomplishment even more impressive is the fact that he was one of the few artists in the highlife genre who sang primarily in English. This unique approach not only set him apart but also showcased his versatility and contribution to the highlife tradition.

Amarh Pino’s story is a testament to the toughness and determination of artists in the face of difficulty. It serves as an inspiration to aspiring musicians and a reminder that with unwavering passion, hard work, and a touch of innovation, success can be achieved even when the odds are stacked against you.
