My VGMA Nominations are a reflection of my efforts in 2020, I just got started! — Kahpun

From the ‘Coast of Cape’ in the Central Region in Ghana is a very vocal and authoritative voice who disturbed the Reggae/Dancehall scene from April during the lockdown period till the year came to a close.

His name is Kahpun — he was on the lips of everybody during the Asaase Sound Clash moments. Prior to that, Kahpun had worked extremely hard to get signed on to Hunta Productions, a UK-based Ghanaian Record Label and also in collaboration with Red Panther Music, run by Mr. Logic.

Kahpun debuted as a Nominee into this year’s Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA), not with one nomination but 2! He got nominated for “Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year” and “Reggae/Dancehall Song of the Year” categories.

The elated Dancehall Singjay told BeenieWords.com that it was a well deserved feat looking at the investments made by him and his Management, Hanta Productions, also owing to the level of work involved — from releasing multiples of songs, shooting music videos, playing virtual concert and also engaging press to push the works.

“Make Up” by Kahpun which got nominated featured Stonebwoy — the song, though a hardcore Dancehall cut was one of the top favourites by music fans. The push on the song got Kahpun another level of recognition thus pulling him closer to mainstream. The song had an official video shot for it too.

Preceding “Make Up” featuring Stonebwoy was a big international collaboration Kahpun inked with popular Jamaican Reggae Singer, Anthony B. Via an online poll and competition, Kahpun won as the only African artiste to get featured on the record titled “Jailbird”. That song also had an official video shot for it and got listed on Europe’s biggest Reggae Network, Reggaeville.com

He dropped “Board Box”, a controversial Dancehall song to lash out some of his fellow Dancehall acts involved in the Asaase Sound Clash. The counteraction song dropped by Kahpun to defend his turf during the Asaase Sound Clash period came with a heavy rebuttal from his colleague Dancehallers but he stood firm and claimed his space. Kahpun maintained visibility all through till he came back with a Reggae cut titled “I Still Love You”, produced by Riddim Boss.

Kahpun is very hopeful of winning his nominated categories in this year’s VGMAs.
